Whale watching

Sunday, August 18, 2019

Hey gang! So I’ve been on a hiatus and it’s been okay I’m mostly just working and going to the gym which later results to me being exhausted leaving me with not much to do BUT we did something fun this past weekend we went WHALE WATCHING...again! Kevin just finished his clinical trials and school is just one week away for me now so we thought what better way to celebrate a few more days of freedom than going whale watching! We’ve been before during July and we got really lucky and saw some minke whale and common dolphins. So I wanted to make a blog post about our trip to help you guys out!

DISCOUNT:
So we've gone to Davey's Locker three times now, it's probably our favorite one for many reasons. For starters, the Groupon discount is great, basically half off the original price??!?! UM YES. This is also the only boat where we've seen whales and lots of dolphins. After the boat ride they  also give you another discount for another trip which is what we did this trip!

WHAT TO BRING:
You're going to be in the sun for a very long time with barely any shade, so you're gonna need SUNSCREEN, SPF, ALLADAT. Make sure to take a look at the weather as well, if it's hot you can bring shorts but make sure to wear that SPF! However, I'm always cold and even with shorts and a windbreaker the wind made me very cold. This trip I decided to wear a warm fleecy jacket and leggings. They also recommend to wear shoes with rubber soles, NO HEELS, NO LEATHER SOLES, AND NO SANDALS, it's purely for safety. I wore my running shoes and so did Kevin. I also wore a hat to protect my face and head! Always gonna rep my girl Lana hehe

PARKING:
So there is available parking nearby the pier but the parking only lasts two hours and the boat ride is about two hours. You also want to check in early so that adds time as well. There is some street parking but you're going to have to go early in order to find a spot. We went on an earlier trip and we found a spot but it's up to you! Luckily, Saturdays and Sundays during the summer time there is free parking at Avon Street Parking Lot which will lead you to the Balboa Peninsula Trolley which will take you straight to the pier. As long as you download the "ParkMobile" app and register your car and parking zone number use promo code “trolley19” to get free parking all day!

The trolley will take you to the pier and the area where you can get dropped off at the ma is really easy to see and the driver will help you with anything!

You're going to be looking for this big sign and the door to check in. It's recommended to check in and hour early if not then at least 30 minutes early to line up. Honestly you have to only line up if you want to have a spot at the top deck,  but we like to be low and close to the water.

THE TRIP:
So far we've been onto different boats with the same company one is smaller and this one was wayyy bigger holding more passengers. We sat at the front of the boat and it was the BEST! The sun was in our face the whole time and the waves hit the boat and the water sprayed into our faces, and we LOVED IT! It felt like being on a water ride and it was really fun. We had some beer on the boat and chilled and we went pretty far from the dock. We were out for about and hour and nothing...just waves and suddenly we stopped. The captain notified the whole boat that Minke Whales were nearby so we waited and out of the water they breached a little! We saw them like five different times maybe,  and it was just a wondrous moment. These whales are very skittish and don't play with the boats like grey whales do so when they breech it's mostly their back flip coming up. We had the best time and it was such a relaxing day!
