4th of July Whale Watching

Thursday, July 5, 2018

Kevin and I are kinda starting a mini tradition for 4th of July which is to go whale watching! We went last year and had to best most relaxing time. Whale watching can be a little expensive but here's some tips for maximum fun without breaking the bank!

  • Always check Groupon! I was able to get an amazing deal for two for almost more than half the price! There are different locations so make sure you look for the fine print, such as exclusions from holidays etc.
  • The first whale watching place we ever went to was Dana Wharf at Dana Point and on Tuesdays they do 50% off their price which is super awesome. We really liked this place the staff was fun and entertaining. They had food and beverages and EVEN BEER AND WINE. If you don't get motion sickness I would definitely suggest having a small drink on the boat!
  • Schedule accordingly, I'd say it's best to get to the Wharf/Dock at least an hour before your departure time is. You can never be too early and prepared, just in case there's a crowd/parking/ or just anything that can happen in between!
  • Always be prepared it's usually a two hour boat ride in the sun! You'll want sunscreen, sunglasses, perhaps a hat for maximum protection!
  • That being said dressing for a boat is very tricky, it will be cold and windy regardless of how hot it is that day. I always suggest layers, so top, hoodie, and a windbreaker. For bottoms, you could wear pants or shorts if it's going to be really hot go for the shorts! When the boat stops while looking for whales it's going to get very warm as the sun is beating down on you! Also depends what time you go!
  • ALWAYS WEAR RUBBER SOLE SHOES, preferable closed toe shoes. It's safer and reccommended
  • most places will probably let you bring on water and some snacks, so definitely bring a canteen of water to stay hydrated!

Now to the fun stuff!
We had out whale watching time for 11:30AM, so it's always recommended to get there an hour early to check in so you're ready to go when the time comes. The boat we went on had an upper deck and lower deck! The upper deck was covered and roomy and really nice. They also had beer and snack on the boat! We were close to seeing a blue whale but sadly it didn't resurface. Innstead we saw a big pod of dolphins!! There had to be about one hundred and it was super cool seeing baby's junping in the water with their moms.

It was a wonderful experience and super relaxing. We got drained out by the sun that left us super tired but just a wonderful day!
